Profile of DBCTE

Don Bosco College of Teacher Education (DBCTE) is named after Don Bosco, the great educator and friend of youth. He had a difficult childhood. By dint of hard work and heroic sacrifices he became a priest in 1841. He dedicated himself to the service of poor youth, offering them food, shelter and education. He opened for them schools, technical schools, hostels and oratories. He founded a society of collaborators and extended his work to all over Europe and eventually to all continents. Don Bosco died on 31 January 1888 and was declared a saint on 1 April 1934.

He founded the Don Bosco Society, also known as ‘The Salesians of Don Bosco’. The society has over 32,000 members (men and women) working in 132 countries. Through a global network of educational and social service organizations which include 15 universities, 58 institutes of higher education and thousands of schools and social development centres, it cares for the less privileged and marginalized sections of society. It currently caters to over fifteen million young people the world over. Because of its reach and expertise in the field of education, the Society enjoys consultancy status at the United Nations.

In India, the Salesians of Don Bosco began their operations way back in 1906. From a small beginning with a trade school and hostel for poor children at Thanjavoor, Tamil Nadu, the Society today has over 5000 members (Fathers, Sisters and Brothers). The Society started its work in Northeast in 1922. Its services are offered through 31 colleges, over 100 technical schools, and a large network of high schools and scores of non-formal technical and agricultural training centres, spread across the country, covering the entire spectrum of social development. The society also runs literacy centres, shelters for street children and rehabilitation and relief operations.

DON BOSCO COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

Don Bosco College of Teacher Education (DBCTE) Tura is a teacher training institution of the Salesian of Don Bosco established and managed by the Don Bosco Society in India, Northeast Region. Don Bosco College of Teacher Education is a Registered Society under the Society Registration ct of 1860 (Reg. No. SR/TDBC-232/91 of 1991). The College has been granted recognition by the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) by its order No. ERC/7-40(ER-40.4.1)/2003/3415 dated 11.12.2003. The college, recognised by the Government of Meghalaya, is affiliated to North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong.

PRESIDENT

Rev. Fr. V.M. Thomas, Salesian Provincial of Guwahati Province is the President of the Governing Body of the College. He is acclaimed as an HRD consultant, master trainer, passionate youth icon, ardent educationist, a proactive catalyst of social transformation, an institution builder and an inspirational leader. He inspires, guides and leads like a good shepherd. His academic and professional excellence and his capacity for networking and social involvement are phenomenal. He is a gold medallist in B.Ed from Guwahati University in the year 1981, besides other Academic Degrees and professional qualifications, including one from Harvard, USA.

PRINCIPAL

Dr. John Parankimalil (P.D. John), popularly known as Fr. P.D. Johny, currently, Principal of Don Bosco College of Teacher Education, Tura was awarded the title, ‘Pioneer of Education’ by Dr Mukul Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, in 2014 and ‘Green Mission Champion Award’ on Republic Day in 2015 at Tura. He was presented the Best Teacher award by Shri Kapil Sibal, Union HRD Minister in 2009, and received Computer Excellence Award from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, in 2002 when he was the Principal of St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong. He was the National President of All India Association of Catholic Schools, New Delhi, from 2002-2005 and the Charter President of the Rotary Club of Orchid City, Shillong. He has authored over ten books and written numerous articles. He conducts seminars and conferences for Heads of Schools, Parents, Teachers, Students and Community Leaders.

VISION STATEMENT

Guided by the moral and educational philosophy of St John Bosco, Don Bosco College of Teacher Education (DBCTE) envisions generations of in-service and pre-service teachers qualified and motivated to impart quality education at the secondary and higher secondary levels. Don Bosco’s principles of education – based on reason, religion and kindness – will guide the training programme. There is no better contribution to education than the effective training and motivation of teachers.

Objectives

The Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) Programme of DBCTE aims at developing the understanding and competencies required by teacher-trainees for effective teaching-learning process at the secondary stage. It enables in-service and pre-service teachers to select and organise learning experiences according to the requirements of today’s learners. In addition, it provides knowledge and develops in them an understanding of areas such as student psychology, guidance and counselling, educational evaluation, educational technology, school management, etc.

The College conducts out-reach programmes for teachers in other schools to improve the quality of education in the State and region.

Programme Objectives

The programme aims to enable teacher-trainees to achieve the following objectives:

  1. To systematize experiences and strengthen the professional competencies of in-service and pre-service teachers.
  2. To acquire knowledge and develop an understanding of the various methods and approaches of organising learning experiences of secondary school students.
  3. To develop skills for selecting and organising learning experiences.
  4. To understand the nature of the learning process.
  5. To develop skills in dealing with the academic and personal problems of learners.
  6. To acquire knowledge and develop an understanding of the various procedures and techniques of evaluation and their classroom applications.
  7. To develop skills involved in selecting, developing and using evaluation tools.
  8. To acquire knowledge and develop an understanding of various aspects of school management.
  9. To develop competencies for organising various instructional and student support activities.
  10. To develop an appreciation of the role of the teacher in the prevailing socio-cultural and political system in general and the educational system in particular.
